Spanish is the official language of 21 countries. 19 of them are in Latinamerica: Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, México, Nicaragua, Panama, Uruguay, Perú, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Uruguay and Venezuela.
The two countries left are Spain, in Europe, and Equatorial Guinea, in Africa.
And guess what? Most of the books for Spanish learners are based in the variety of Spanish from Spain!
Although Spanish speakers understand each other in general contexts, it’s true that there are some differences between the Spanish from Spain and the Spanish from Latin America. These differences are specially remarkable in everyday contexts. For example, when talking about the food, the clothes, when ordering in a bar and some other quotidian situations, we use different structures and different vocabulary.
